court jails 85 fake corp members

An Upper Area Court in Keffi, Nasarawa State has sentenced 85 fake NYSC members to one year imprisonment each or an option of N21,000 fine after they had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
According to court records, the accused persons were sentenced on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps had on Wednesday paraded 87 fake corps members before the media in Abuja after they had been arrested at Nasarawa Toto for operating an illegal “NYSC orientation camp.’’


The presiding judge, Mr Ali Chongda said he had tempered justice with mercy because of the pleas of the defence lawyers and because the accused persons were first offenders.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Chief Magistrate Court I presided over by Isa Mohammed yesterday sentenced three fake National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members to one and half years imprisonment each with option of N16, 000 fine.
The three convicts are Abdulrashid Abdulkadir, Ibuowo Kazeem and Isma’ila Aliyu, who were arraigned in court after they were arrested at the NYSC camp, Wailo by a senior police officer on duty at the camp, ASP Barde Kawu, who took them to the state Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.

One of them, Abdulrashid presented himself as a corp member while Ibuowo Kazeem claimed to be a final year student, 400 level, studying Agric Economics at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. They were arraigned in court and charged with conspiracy and impersonation contrary to section 94 and section 132 of the penal code.
They pleaded guilty and the Chief Magistrate, Isa Mohammed, who tried them summarily said “since the suspects had accepted the charges without equivocation, they were summarily tried as per section 157 of the penal code, with compassion, being first offenders, on the first count charge they were sentenced to six months imprisonment with option of fine N6,000 and on the second count charge they were sentenced to one year imprisonment with option of fine N10,000 and all the sentences are to run concurrently.”
